Steak Sandwich With Horseradish Aioli

  • Author: ava_chapman
  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

A quick and easy weeknight dinner featuring a seared sirloin steak, creamy horseradish aioli, and toasted brioche buns, ready in under 20 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound thin-cut sirloin or flank steak
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2–3 tablespoons prepared horseradish
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 small clove garlic, minced
  • Kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon high-smoke point oil (avocado or canola)
  • 4 brioche buns or soft potato rolls
  • Handful of arugula or spinach
  • Provolone or Swiss cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, horseradish, lemon juice, minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Whisk until smooth and set aside.
  2. Pat the steak dry with paper towels and season both sides generously with salt and pepper.
  3. Heat a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat for 2 minutes. Add oil and swirl to coat until it shimmers.
  4. Place steak in the hot pan. Cook for 2-3 minutes without moving to develop a crust. Flip and cook for another 2-3 minutes for medium-rare (130°F). Add cheese on top if using during the last minute.
  5. Transfer steak to a cutting board and let rest for 3 minutes.
  6. While steak rests, slice buns and toast cut-side down in the same skillet for 30-60 seconds until golden.
  7. Slice the rested steak against the grain into thin strips.
  8. Spread horseradish aioli on both bun halves. Layer arugula on the bottom bun, pile on sliced steak, add more aioli if desired, and close the sandwich.

Notes

Pat the steak dry before cooking to ensure a good sear. Let the steak rest for 3 minutes to redistribute juices. Slice against the grain for tenderness. The aioli can be made up to 5 days in advance.
