  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

A quick and easy weeknight dinner featuring juicy ground beef patties simmered in a rich, savory mushroom-onion gravy. Ready in under 30 minutes, this comfort food classic beats takeout on time and quality.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450g) Ground Beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1/2 cup (50g) Plain Breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) Whole Milk
  • 1 large Egg, beaten
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 packet (1 oz) Dry Onion Soup Mix
  • 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Black Pepper
  • 2 tbsp (30g) Butter
  • 1 medium Yellow Onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves Garlic, fresh minced
  • 2 tbsp (15g) All-Purpose Flour
  • 1.5 cups (360ml) Beef Broth (low sodium)
  • 1 packet (1 oz) Dry Onion Soup Mix
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire Sauce

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, beaten egg, 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce, 1 packet dry onion soup mix, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until uniform.
  2. Divide mixture into four equal portions and shape into oval patties about 1/2-inch thick. Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb.
  3. Sprinkle patties with extra salt and pepper.
  4. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat with oil or butter. Sear patties for 3-4 minutes per side until a dark brown crust forms. Remove to a clean plate.
  5. In the same pan, reduce heat to medium and melt butter. Sauté diced onions for 5 minutes until soft, then add minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
  6. Sprinkle flour over onions and stir constantly for 1-2 minutes to create a roux.
  7. Slowly pour in beef broth while whisking constantly. Add the second packet of dry onion soup mix and 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce. Whisk until smooth.
  8. Bring gravy to a gentle simmer and cook for 3-5 minutes until it thickens.
  9. Return seared patties to the pan, nestling them into the gravy. Cover and simmer on low for 5-7 minutes until cooked through.
  10. Remove lid and let gravy bubble for 1 minute. Serve hot with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or crusty bread.

Notes

Keep ground beef cool until cooking to maintain juiciness. Do not press down on patties while searing. If gravy is too thin, simmer longer or use a cornstarch slurry. For gluten-free, swap breadcrumbs and flour for GF alternatives. For dairy-free, use plant-based milk and oil.
